Why go

What Ephesus adds to a Turkey trip

Ephesus is not just a ruin with one famous facade. It still reads like a city: main avenues, elite homes, public toilets, temples, theatres, shops, and a harbor road that once led toward the sea.

Trip role: Use Ephesus as the anchor of an Aegean history trip. It is the site that makes first-time visitors understand the scale of Roman Asia Minor.

Highlights

What to look for on site

Library of Celsus

The signature facade and the best place to understand the city scale.

Great Theatre

A vast theatre associated with the citys Roman public life.

Terrace Houses

Protected Roman homes with mosaics and frescoes; worth the extra time.

Curetes Street

The main walk where Ephesus feels most alive.

Planning

How to fit it into the day

Start from the Upper Gate if you can arrange transport, then walk downhill through the main axis and finish near the Lower Gate.

  • Arrive early or late afternoon; midday marble glare is intense in summer.
  • Carry water and sun protection; shade is limited inside the archaeological zone.
  • Combine with Selcuk Museum if you want the artifacts to complete the story.

Tickets

Before you go

Ticketed site; Terrace Houses usually require a separate ticket. Museum Pass rules can change, so check current terms before visiting.
