Istanbul First Day Survival Guide
Your first hours in Istanbul set the tone for the whole trip. This is not a sightseeing list — it is the practical sequence locals recommend to friends: airport → phone → transport card → safe ride → sensible hotel base.
Step 1: Know which airport you land at
Istanbul has two international airports:
- IST (Istanbul Airport) — north of the city, main hub for Turkish Airlines and many long-haul flights.
- SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) — on the Asian side, common for Pegasus and many European low-cost routes.
They are not close to each other. Check your booking confirmation before you book a hotel transfer or tell anyone where to pick you up.
Step 2: Get from the airport to the city
From IST
- M11 metro — best value; buy an Istanbulkart at the airport and ride to Gayrettepe (connect to M2 for Taksim area).
- Havaist buses — 24/7, luggage-friendly, fixed routes to Taksim, Kadıköy, Beşiktaş, etc.
- Taxi / transfer — fine after midnight or with heavy luggage; use BiTaksi app or pre-booked transfer.
From SAW
- Havabus to Taksim or Kadıköy.
- Marmaray + metro possible but awkward with luggage — many first-timers prefer Havabus or taxi.
See our detailed IST transportation guide and SAW guide for routes and fares.
Step 3: SIM card or eSIM
- Before landing: Airalo or Holafly eSIM works if your phone supports it — instant data at the gate.
- At the airport: Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom kiosks; passport required; plans usually 7–30 days.
- In the city: Official stores in malls or high streets — sometimes better value than airport kiosks.
You need mobile data for maps, BiTaksi, and Google Translate. Do this before you leave the terminal if possible.
Step 4: Istanbulkart
One card covers metro, tram, ferry, funicular, and most buses. Buy at airport machines or any major station; load credit with cash or card.
- One card can be shared — tap once per person (not per bag).
- Keep ₺20–50 spare on the card for a full day of hopping around.
- Ferries (Eminönü ↔ Kadıköy) are often the highlight — and cheap.
Step 5: Taxi rules (read before you get in)
- Use BiTaksi or iTaksi — do not hail random taxis at the airport curb unless you know the drill.
- Confirm the meter is on or agree a fixed price for airport runs.
- IST to Sultanahmet off-peak: often 45–75 minutes; SAW to Kadıköy: 45–60 minutes — traffic doubles these at rush hour.

Step 6: Where to sleep on night one
After a long flight, stay somewhere walkable to food and transit, not necessarily the #1 sight:
- Sultanahmet — closest to Hagia Sophia; busy, some taxi hassle.
- Karaköy / Galata — great for food, ferries, tram; hills with luggage.
- Kadıköy (Asian side) — local vibe if you land at SAW.

💡 First-day checklist
Airport confirmed → SIM or eSIM → Istanbulkart → app taxi or metro → hotel with late check-in → short walk + early dinner. Save major sights for day two when you are rested.
What to do tonight (low effort)
- One ferry crossing at sunset if you are near the water.
- Dinner on a side street, not the main square with photo menus.
- ATM withdrawal from a bank branch, not a standalone machine in the tourist zone.
