How to Travel Between Turkey’s Main Stops
Turkey’s highlights are spread across three regions: Marmara (Istanbul), Central Anatolia (Cappadocia), and the Aegean/Mediterranean coast (Ephesus, Bodrum, Antalya, Fethiye). Here is how locals and experienced travelers connect them without losing whole days to bad planning.
Distance reality check
- Istanbul → Cappadocia (Göreme): ~1 hr flight to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV); ~10–11 hrs overnight bus.
- Istanbul → Antalya: ~1 hr 15 flight; ~12 hrs bus; driving ~8–9 hrs.
- Istanbul → Izmir (for Ephesus): ~1 hr flight; ~8 hrs bus.
- Izmir / Ephesus → Bodrum: ~3 hrs drive or bus via Aydın.
- Antalya → Fethiye: ~3 hrs coastal drive or bus.
- Cappadocia → Antalya: No direct train; fly via Istanbul or long bus (~8+ hrs).
Istanbul ↔ Cappadocia
Best: Morning flight IST/SAW → Kayseri or Nevşehir; shared shuttle or pre-booked transfer to Göreme (60–90 min).
Budget: Overnight bus from Istanbul Esenler or Dudullu otogar — arrives early; you save a hotel night but sleep quality varies.
Skip: Day-trip flights both ways with only one night — too rushed.
Istanbul ↔ Antalya
Best: Domestic flight (Turkish, Pegasus, AJet) — multiple daily; Antalya airport (AYT) to city 20–30 min.
Scenic: Coastal drive if you rent a car one-way (expensive drop fees) — allow two days with stops.
Istanbul / Izmir ↔ Ephesus
Ephesus archaeological site is near Selçuk, not Izmir city.
- Fly to Izmir (ADB) → train or taxi to Selçuk (~1 hr).
- Day trip from Izmir possible; staying in Selçuk lets you enter Ephesus at opening time.
Ephesus area ↔ Bodrum
Bus from Selçuk or Izmir otogar to Bodrum (~3–4 hrs). No need to return to Istanbul between them.
Classic route: Istanbul → Ephesus/Selçuk → Bodrum → fly home from Bodrum (BJV) or back to IST.
Antalya ↔ Fethiye ↔ Kaş
Coastal dolmuş and buses run the Lycian coast; many travelers rent a car for 3–4 days for beaches and Kayaköy.
See beach towns compared to choose a base.
Booking tips
- Flights: Book 3–6 weeks ahead in summer; hand luggage only on Pegasus saves money.
- Buses: Metro Turizm, Pamukkale, Kamil Koç — buy online or at otogar; choose 2+1 seats for legroom.
- Trains: Limited for tourists; Istanbul–Ankara YHT exists but does not replace flights to coast/Cappadocia.
Sample connections (7 days)
- Fly Istanbul → Cappadocia (2 nights).
- Fly Cappadocia → Antalya via IST or direct if available (2 nights).
- Bus or fly Antalya → Istanbul (1 night) — or fly home from Antalya.
Sample connections (10 days)
- Istanbul (3 nights).
- Fly to Izmir → Ephesus/Selçuk (2 nights).
- Bus to Bodrum (3 nights).
- Fly Bodrum → Istanbul or international departure.
💡 Golden rule
Move every 2–3 days maximum. Each transfer burns half a day with check-out, airport, and check-in. Two regions done well beats four regions rushed.
